Soldotna/Homer Spit
Our plans today were to get an early start and head to Homer…
On our way to drop off fish at the processor I noticed a weird sound the truck was making. We found out that a bolt went through the back tire and we were well on our way to a flat tire. That waylaid our departure for an hour.
On the way down south to Homer we stopped in at Anchor Point which is a beach that has a very unique way of launching and retrieving boats. They use a skidder! It’s quite an operation to watch and they are very busy.
The other operation that is very busy can be found on the shoreline where seagulls and eagles fill up with fish skeletons that wash up on shore.
Homer Spit is a portion of land that juts out into the Kachemak Bay. It’s a quaint little touristy area with lots of gift shops and food and opportunities to book various guided tours - all along the boardwalk. No matter where you are though you cannot get away from the gorgeous glacier mountain view’s directly across the bay! It is so picturesque it doesn’t look real.
If anyone is thinking we have lost our focus about fishing today is mistaken! We were on the river by 7:30 this evening and caught our limit of 6 fish per person by 10:30!! We had a blast. Gary had 8 hookups but lost them and Kim also lost 3 while fighting her fish and also 1 at the net. The fish were jumping all around us as we would get fish on at the same time and the netter would have to run between the two fish. Once when Kim had a fish on and I was the netter the fish jumped right into the net! Weirdly enough, Kim snagged another line in the water. As she reeled it in there was a rainbow trout on the line she was caught on! Of course catching 18 fish means another hour and a half of filleting. Kim will definitely have her 40 pounds to go home with on Friday.
TODAYS FISH COUNT: 18/44.4 lbs
Total fish count: 31
