Rain, 50s

130 miles / 2.5 hours

Creek View Campground, Seward AK

The question is not "will it rain?” It’s “How much rain are we getting today?” The answer is... a lot.

We left Anchorage with the trailer in tow today and moved down south to Seward. We drove along Turnagain Arm once again but didn't have the pleasure of seeing the mountains or glaciers. Everything was grey.

Once in Seward we walked along the shoreline where the iditarod sled race begins, we drove through an area of shops, and admired the many murals this town is known for.

We grabbed an early dinner at the Highlander Inn where we were told of their delicious bread. It didn’t disappoint. The food was delicious.

At 6:00 Kim and I met up with our kayak guide, Anna, who suited us up with gear to go kayaking in the rain. The clouds had descended so low we couldn’t make out the soaring mountains around us. But that just caused us to focus more on the water, trees, and rugged shoreline around us.

We traveled about 1.5 miles along the coastline where we stopped for a short hike in this pristine forest that had trees dripping with lichen from every limb. We drank hot chocolate and ate granola bars before heading back to our boats.

The paddle back to our pickup spot was even more interesting as we came across three lake otters fishing for their dinner, then two juvenile bald eagles, and finally a playful sea otter floating on its back while eating its dinner.

It was a memorable mother/daughter trip that we won’t forget any time soon.

We topped the day off with a campfire, s’mores, and wine at 11pm. What a great day in spite of the relentless rain.
