July 1st & 2nd, 2024
A couple of grey days here in Alaska. The skies are grey due to the clouds the rivers are grey due to glacier silt and the mountains are grey due to the heavy smoke as we make our way north towards Fairbanks. The closest one to us has now consumed 140,000 acres. Crazy!
We arrived at our KOA in Fairbanks to a nice surprise. They upgraded our site for no extra charge! I’ve never seen a site with a patio, table, chairs, umbrella AND grill! Gary watched the sunset last night at 11:30 while having an adult beverage on the patio. The smoky air makes for a nice sunset… it’s about the only thing good about smoke.
The KOA actually borders Eilson AFB which is quite an impressive base even from the outside as we drove by. But we can see flights take off over the campground also. So proud of our armed services on this 4th of July weekend! But especially the Air Force! (Love you Dad)
We started our stay here last night with halibut fingers and an Alaskan Amber beer! So delicious. Just the way we remembered it.
So today is a maintenance day. Laundry, groceries and cleaning. It’s good to finally be settled somewhere for a few days! Now to relax and enjoy that patio!
